BAOFENG UV-5R

Simplex Programming:

In this example you will learn how to program both a simplex frequency, as well as a repeater. 

For the simplex frequency, you will be using the National 2 Meter Calling Frequency which is 146.520 MHz. 

For the repeater, you’ll be using a generic frequency of 147.150 MHz, with a positive offset of 600 kHz, and a Receive Tone of 123.0.   

  1. Press the VFO/MR button. 
  2. Press the A/B button and choose A for the upper display so the radio will save the data. 
  3. Press the BAND button, and select the band that corresponds to the frequency you would like to enter. 
  4. Disable the TDR DUAL WATCH DUAL STAND-BY by pressing MENU, and the #7 key. 
  5. Press MENU and either the UP or DOWN arrow keys until the display reads OFF.
  6. Press the MENU button to confirm the setting is saved, and press the EXIT key. 
  7. Enter 146.520.
  8. Next, you’ll assign a frequency to a channel slot.
  9. Press MENU, #27, and press MENU again.   
  10. Using the UP or DOWN arrow keys, you can select a channel number.
  11. Press MENU to confirm the setting is saved, and press EXIT.

Repeater Programming:

  1. Press the VFO/MR button, and enter the frequency.
  2. Press the MENU button, #11 and set the R-CTCS which is the receive (RX) Squelch Tone.  In this example, set it to the OFF position. 
  3. Now set the transmit Squelch Tone by pressing MENU, #13, and press MENU again. 
  4. Using the UP or DOWN arrow keys, select the tone for the repeater.  In this example, you’re looking for 123.0.
  5. Press MENU to confirm the setting is saved, and then press EXIT 
  6. Now program the offset by pressing MENU, #25, and press MENU again.  Using the UP or DOWN arrow keys, select either positive or negative.  In our example you will select positive (+). 
  7. To enter the offset value, press MENU, #26, and press MENU again, and enter the repeater’s offset.    
  8. Lastly, the frequency needs to be saved by pressing MENU, #27, you will be taken to the memory channel option and press MENU again, and select an available channel slot.  Next, press MENU and the channel has been programmed. 
  9. Press the VFO/MR button, and you will see the saved frequency as a channel. 

Yaesu FT-60

Simplex Programming:

One of the helpful features of the FT-60, is it automatically detects the offset with functionality called the Automatic Repeater Shift which is MENU option #4 and titled ARS.  When entering a simplex frequency, disable this feature first; however, if you’re programming a repeater then you can leave it enabled. 

  1. To disable ARS press the F/F key, and then the SET key, and turn the knob until you see ARS on the display.  Press SET and the display will show if the feature is ON or OFF, and you’ll use the knob to put it in the OFF position, and press SET, and then press the PUSH-TO-TALK (PTT) to exit out of the MENU.  
  2. Enter the 2-meter national calling frequency which is 146.520 MHz.
  3. Press the V/M button to enter VFO mode.    
  4. Enter 146.520.
  5. To program the frequency into the memory, press and hold the F/W key.  Then you will be presented with the next available channel slot. 
  6. Long-press the F/W button and you will see MEMORY-IN on the display.

Repeater Programming:

  1. Press the V/M key to enter VFO mode.
  2. Ensure Automatic Repeater Shift is enabled by pressing the F/W key, and the SET key.  Turn the knob to MENU item #4, and press the SET key.  Use the knob to set ARS to the ON position, and press SET to save the setting, and press the PTT button to exit the MENU.
  3. Next, set the TONE mode by pressing, F/W and the #1 key.  Rotate the dial to TONE, and the F/W key. 
  4. Enter 147.150
  5. Press F/W, and the SET key so you can enter the other values. 
  6. Using the knob, scroll to MENU item #50 which is TONE FREQUENCY.  Press F/W, and use the knob to select 123.0, and press the F/W button to exit the MENU.      
  7. Long-press the F/W button until you see MEMORY IN on the display.

Yaesu VX-6

Simplex Programming:

As with the FT-60 which will automatically detect the offset, the VX-6 also has this functionality.  Before programming a simplex frequency, you’ll want to turn off the Automatic Repeater Shift before entering a frequency.  You can do that by pressing the F/W key and the SET key, which takes you into the MENU.  Turn the knob until you see ARS which is MENU item #4

  1. Short press the V/M key to enter VFO mode.
  2. Enter 146.520.
  3. Long-press the F/W key, and then short-press the F/W key to save the frequency.    

Repeater Programming:

Ensure the Automatic Repeater Shift is enabled by pressing the F/W key, and the SET key.  Turn the knob to MENU item #4, and press the SET key.  Use the knob to set ARS to the ON position, and press SET to save the setting, and press the PTT button to exit the MENU

  1. Short press the V/M key to get into VFO mode.
  2. Enter 147.150
  3. Press the F/W key, and the SET key so we can set the other values. 
  4. Turn the knob to MENU item #60 which is titled SQUELCH TYPE.  Press the SET key, and use the knob to select the TONE.  In this example, select TONE SQUELCH.Press the SET key to save. 
  5. Using the knob, scroll to MENU item #66 which is TONE FREQUENCY.  Press SET, and use the knob to select 123.0, and press the SET key to save the setting, and press the PTT button to exit the MENU.
  6. Last, select the channel slot you want the repeater on; short-press the F/W key to save.      

Yaesu FT-65

Simplex Programming:

  1. To enter VFO mode, press the ‘V/M’ key. 
  2. Enter 146.520
  3. Long-press the FUNCTION button until you see the MENU options.
  4. Scroll to MENU item #24 titled REPEATER, and short-press the FUNCTION button.  Here you can confirm if the Automatic Repeater Shift is set in either the ON or OFF position by short-pressing the option, and using the UP or DOWN arrow keys.  Once you’ve made a selection, short-press the FUNCTION button again, and short-press the PTT button to return to VFO mode.   
  5. To save the repeater, long-press the V/M key.  Name the channel using the keypad.  Pick a character on the keypad, and short-press the FUNCTION button to move to the next character.  After naming the channel, long-press the V/M key. 

Repeater Programming:

  1. To enter VFO mode, press the V/M key. 
  2. Enter 147.150
  3. Long-press the FUNCTION button until you see the MENU options.
  4. Use the UP and DOWN arrow keys to scroll to MENU item #8 titled CTCSS, and press the FUNCTION button. 
  5. You will see an arrow pointing to the TONE value.  Press the FUNCTION button, and the value will begin flashing, and you can use the UP and DOWN arrow keys to find the desired value.  In our example, set it to 123.0, and press the FUNCTION button to stop the value from flashing. 
  6. To exit, long-press the FUNCTION button to return to the MENU
  7. Scroll to MENU item #24 titled REPEATER, and press the FUNCTION button.  Here you can confirm if the Automatic Repeater Shift is set in either the ON or OFF position. 
  8. Since you’re programming a repeater TONE, go to MENU item #29 titled SQUELCH TYPE, and select T-TONE which is titled TRANSMIT TONE, and press the FUNCTION button to return to the MENU.
  9. To save the repeater, long-press the V/M key.  Then name the channel using the keypad.  Pick a character on the keypad, and then press the FUNCTION button to move to the next character.  After naming the channel, long-press the V/M key.
